About Gorilla Habituation
A significant number of Mountain gorillas that remain wild require a habituation process. The Mountain Gorilla habituation process takes over four years for gorillas to become fully accustomed to humans. This experience offers a unique opportunity to observe their behaviour and learn about the habituation process in the wild. Gorilla habituation is different from gorilla trekking. This full-day adventure usually begins as early as 6 a.m. and often extends throughout the day. Gorillas that are not fully habituated typically live at a distance from humans and can display aggressive behaviour when spotted. Their social structure mirrors that of habituated gorillas, generally led by a silverback male. This directs the group to safety, and visitors are strongly advised to maintain a distance of at least 10 meters from the gorillas at all times.
