Gorilla Tracking Rules - Rwanda and Uganda
Anyone preparing for the mountain gorilla trekking experience in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, or Mgahinga National Park in Uganda should familiarise themselves with the gorilla trekking rules and regulations before entering the forest. These regulations are consistent and are designed to protect both the trekkers and the once endangered Mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
- Do not visit the gorillas if you have a cold or other infectious illness
- The minimum age for tracking gorillas is 15 years
- Human waste should be buried 30 cm deep
- The maximum number of visitors is 8 per Gorilla group
- Maintain 10 10-meter distance from the gorillas
- Smoking and eating are not permitted on the tour during gorilla viewing.
- Visits are limited to one hour per gorilla group per day
- Do not use flash lights on photography
About Mountain Gorillas
Mountain Gorillas are found in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda as well as the Virunga Mountains located in Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Previously listed as critically endangered, their numbers have increased thanks to conservation efforts in both Rwanda and Uganda. In their natural habitat, Mountain Gorillas prefer mountainous areas at higher elevations to help regulate their body temperature, aided by their thick fur. Their large nostrils also contribute to their preference for higher altitudes, which facilitates better oxygen intake. These gentle creatures live in social groups that are led by a dominant silverback, and they typically have a lifespan ranging from 45 to 50 years.
