Kyambura Gorge - Chimpazee Tracking in Uganda

Kyambura Gorge, located within Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda, stretches over 15 kilometres and is famous for its chimp trekking safaris. This stunning location is home to a population of habituated chimpanzees, allowing visitors to interact with them during guided treks in Queen Elizabeth National Park.

For those seeking a unique experience, chimp tracking stands out as one of the most engaging activities in Kyambura Gorge. As our closest relatives, chimpanzees showcase an astonishing level of intelligence that differentiates them from other primate species. While they can walk on two legs for short distances, they generally prefer to move about on all fours. Chimpanzee troops usually consist of between 30 and 80 individuals, often split into smaller groups to forage for food during the day and come together again at night. In the afternoons and evenings, they skilfully build nests high in the trees, bending branches to create comfy resting spots. These clever chimps are most active soon after waking from their nests in the morning, initially foraging for fruit with a carefree attitude before becoming more selective as the day progresses.

Safaris in Kyambura Gorge

In Kyambura Gorge, the chimps exhibit an intriguing behaviour of descending from the trees whenever they notice visitors. With this, they provide an excellent opportunity for close-up photography. Beyond the chimpanzees, trekking through the gorge reveals a wealth of unique biodiversity, allowing visitors to encounter hippos, hogs, forest elephants and rare plant species and towering tropical trees.

The entire experience in Kyambura Gorge typically lasts between two and three hours, and a permit for chimpanzee trekking is priced at $80 which includes park entry fees and a chimpanzee permit. It is important to note that the minimum age for participating in this activity is 12 years. For those interested, we also offer a 3-day chimpanzee Trekking Safari in Kibale National Park for further exploration.
