Mgahinga National Park lies in the great Virunga massif in the Virunga mountains on the borders with Rwanda and the DR Congo. The park is famous for Mountain Gorilla tours and Golden Monkey tracking. Mgahinga National Park has an area of 33.7 sq, and is one of Uganda’s smallest park with a single gorilla family available for tracking and another wild family.
Mgahinga is with three inactive volcanoes of Muhabura mountain, Gahinga and Sabyinyo in altitude ranges of 2227 to 4127 meters above sea level. The park is 15 kms from the main town Kisoro and 3 hours from the Capital Kigali in Rwanda. Mgahinga is known for day tours for Gorilla trek starting from either Rwanda or Kisoro.
Mgahinga national park has primates present, and these besides mountain gorillas are golden monkeys black and white colobus monkeys, the grey monkeys which are Albertine Rift Endemics whose range is now restricted to the Virunga area. There are over 76 mammal species recorded here and they include leopards, African bush elephants, giant forest hogs, bushpigs, buffalos, Cape bushbucks, black-fronted duikers, and several varieties of rodents, bats and small predators.
